Leukaemia
There are a number of different types of leukaemia, some of
which are very slow to develop. The two most common are acute
myeloid leukaemia and acute lymphoblast leukaemia. Both affect
the white blood cells and bone marrow. Too many white cells
are produced which may not work properly and may displace other
blood cells.
Leukaemias typically produce vague symptoms which can easily be
mistaken for other illnesses. Tiredness is one of the main
symptoms. If your doctor suspects you may have leukaemia they will
order blood tests and often bone marrow tests. Treatment is with
chemotherapy, sometimes with steroids, which should put your cancer
into remission. You may then be offered a bone marrow or stem cell
transplant.
