Myeloma
This develops in the bone marrow in what are called plasma
cells. It does not always produce symptoms although many patients
first visit their doctor with pain in the lower back or ribs.
Diagnosis may involve blood tests, bone marrow aspiration and urine
tests. Treatment with chemotherapy and steroids is usually tried
first with radiotherapy sometimes being delayed until
after symptoms develop. Patients are given bone marrow or stem cell
transplants after intensive therapy with chemotherapy or
radiotherapy.
